There is no one rule for every Alberta absence
Whether an employer asks for documentation can depend on the type of leave, the workplace policy, an employment contract, a collective agreement, and the circumstances. A general article cannot decide what applies to one person’s absence.
Alberta’s statutory leaves are not all the same. Read the applicable official leave page and the workplace policy rather than assuming that a sick note is always required or never required.
Different leave types have different rules
Alberta personal and family responsibility leave does not require a medical certificate by legislation, although an employer may have its own documentation policy. Eligible employees may have other leave options with different conditions.
For Alberta long-term illness and injury leave, an eligible employee must provide a medical certificate stating the estimated duration of leave. The provincial page says a physician or nurse practitioner may issue that certificate.
Workplace medical information should be necessary and relevant
Alberta Human Rights Commission guidance explains that medical information may be relevant to confirming an absence, an approximate return date, or work-related restrictions and limitations. The amount of information reasonably needed depends on the situation.
Employers are generally not entitled to a diagnosis except in limited circumstances. This is not legal advice or a determination of what any employer may request in a particular situation.
Keep the request and outcome separate
For a non-emergency health concern, an AlbertaMD public request starts clinic review. The clinic reviews the request and contacts the person about the next step. It does not confirm an appointment, callback time, virtual visit, sick note, certificate, prescription, coverage, fee, or any other outcome.
For a medical emergency, call 911 or seek immediate emergency assessment instead of waiting for a documentation question or an online request.
