The terms can have different uses
“Sick note” is common informal wording for medical documentation about an absence. Alberta employment-standards pages use the formal term “medical certificate” for particular leave requirements.
The terms should not be treated as universally interchangeable. The organization requesting documentation, the leave type, and the purpose can affect what information is needed.
A medical certificate has a defined role in one Alberta leave
For Alberta long-term illness and injury leave, an eligible employee must provide a medical certificate stating the estimated duration of leave. The official page says it may be issued by a physician or nurse practitioner.
That specific rule does not mean every ordinary absence needs the same certificate. Alberta personal and family responsibility leave does not require a medical certificate by legislation, although an employer may have its own documentation policy.
Workplace documentation should be relevant to its purpose
Alberta Human Rights Commission guidance says workplace medical information may address an absence, return date, restrictions, limitations, or accommodation needs. A diagnosis is generally not required except in limited circumstances.
The organization’s current policy determines whether it uses the term sick note, medical certificate, form, or another document. This page does not decide what is sufficient for an individual request.
A request does not pre-approve either document
For a non-emergency health concern, an AlbertaMD public request starts clinic review. The clinic reviews the request and contacts the person about the next step. It does not confirm an appointment, callback time, virtual visit, sick note, certificate, prescription, coverage, fee, or any other outcome.
For a medical emergency, call 911 or seek immediate emergency assessment instead of waiting for a documentation question or an online request.
Common patient questions.
Ready to start? For an eligible non-emergency concern, start your visit form when you are ready; the clinic reviews each request. Call 911 for an emergency or seek prompt professional assessment when a concern cannot wait.
Is a sick note the same as a medical certificate?
Not always. “Sick note” is informal wording, while “medical certificate” is used in some formal Alberta leave rules. Required content depends on the purpose and policy.
What does Alberta long-term illness and injury leave require?
For eligible employees, Alberta says a medical certificate must state the estimated duration of leave and may be issued by a physician or nurse practitioner.
Does either document automatically need a diagnosis?
No. Alberta Human Rights Commission guidance says employers are generally not entitled to a diagnosis except in limited circumstances.
